In the 3rd week of the coding period, I worked on file upload feature, to upload files in the ticket create and modify view. Now one can upload any patch file, media file or screenshots.

We had a meeting over our IRC channel where I discussed about my work and cleared few doubts with my mentors.

I also worked on improving the UI of ticket create and modify views and made it look more consistent in both basic and modernized themes.

The coding period started 2 weeks ago, from 25th May. In these two weeks I worked according to the timeline which I created during the community bonding period.

I worked on implementing Ajax based searching of duplicate tickets feature. Initially, I thought that it has to be created using Whoosh and JQuery from scratch but it turned out that something similar was implemented in /+search view. The /+search view has an Ajax based search form which displays content suggestions of various contenttypes, name term suggestions and content term suggestions along with informations like revision id, size, date of creation and file type. So, I used the code of /+search view for implementing duplicate ticket search. I made some changes in the existing code to allow it to search tickets and added few lines of code in ajaxsearch.html template to render duplicate ticket suggestions as the /+search view displayed some results which were not necessary as suggestions for duplicate tickets. Just a few lines of CSS were only required to keep the rendered result tidy.

Obviously, I was not able to code it in one go as I don't have much experience in working on large codebase. But my mentors were very helpful. They guided me, reviewed my code and gave me suggestion on how to reduce few redundant code segments. Their advice was really helpful as I reduced a lot of redundant code and now it looks pretty.

I am currently working on file upload feature so that a user can upload any patch file, media or screenshot. I've implemented it by creating a new item for every file uploaded. I've few issues regarding how to deal with item_name and itemids which I am discussing with my mentor and I hope that I'll figure it out very soon :)

Community Bonding

I started my open source journey from December' 2014. I am quite fascinated with the concept of open source, I love contributing to code and it feels great to see my contribution doing something good for the community. You learn everyday, I've learned that it doesn't matter how big is your contribution or how much code you write, you'll still learn a lot. I met with some great people on IRC who were very generous and helped me a lot and even replied to my silliest doubts.

In December' 2014, I searched for open source projects where I can use my Python/Django skills. Then I heard about www.openhatch.org. I contacted with the mentors through IRC and they were really helpful. I deployed the development version of the website (https://github.com/openhatch/oh-mainline/) and started to solve some easy bugs and write some documentations. After few easy tasks, I thought of writing some bigger feature. I wrote a tutorial on "Using the command line shell" (http://openhatch.org/missions/shell/about). I got great support and guidance from the openhatch community and I am really thankful for their help in introducing me and getting me started to open source.

One of my college senior (GSoCer 2014) told me about Google Summer of Code, and asked me to search for an organization which works on Python and submit a proposal for GSoC 2015. I looked at PSF's summer of code wiki page: https://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode/2015
where I found MoinMoin pretty interesting (MoinMoin runs that wiki page :)
I looked at its ideas page: https://moinmo.in/GoogleSoc2015/InitialProjectIdeas
and I got even more interested to contribute to its code. I thought, I can use my knowledge in Python to contribute to its code.

I read its code, read the documentation, deployed the development environment and started to look to fix some easy bugs. I discussed about the code with the mentors and they were really helpful. I wrote a proposal to "Improve the Issue Tracker" of MoinMoin-2.0. I discussed with my mentors about what can be done to improve the issue tracker, new features, UI/UX improvements etc. and I am grateful for their guidance.

I am really happy tell that my proposal got selected for GSoC, 2015 :)
And this was all because of the mentors who helped me in getting me started with opensource development and helped me to understand moin-2.0. Though I am not very proficient in Python but, I will try hard to work out every task. Its just a start and I will work hard to implement the project idea with the guidance of my mentors :)

Currently, its the "Community Bonding" period and I am discussing with my mentors about the implementation of the issue tracker, reading the documentation, understanding the technology stack used, understanding the code to be worked upon and find out what more can be done. I will post more about the "community bonding" phase in my next blog post.

This python script can be used to analyse hand gestures by contour detection and convex hull of palm region using OpenCV, a library used for computer vision processes.

1. Capture frames and convert to grayscale

• Our ROI is the the hand region, so we capture the images of the hand and convert them to grayscale. 
• Q. Why grayscale ?
  A. We convert an image from RGB to grayscale and then to binary in order to find the ROI i.e. the portion of the image we are further interested for image processing. By doing this our decision becomes binary: "yes the pixel is of interest" or "no the pixel is not of interest".

 2. Blur image

• I've used Gaussian Blurring on the original image. We blur the image for smoothing and to reduce noise and details from the image. We are not interested in the details of the image but in the shape of the object to track.

• By blurring, we create smooth transition from one color to another and reduce the edge content. We use thresholding for image segmentation, to create binary images from grayscale images.

3. Thresholding

• In very basic terms, thresholding is like a Low Pass Filter by allowing only particular color ranges to be highlighted as white while the other colors are suppressed by showing them as black.
• I've used Otsu's Binarization method. In this method, OpenCV automatically calculates/approximates the threshold value of a bimodal image from its image histogram. But for optimal results, we may need a clear background in front of the webcam which sometimes may not be possible.

5. Find convex hull and convexity defects

• We now find the convex points and the defect points. The convex points are generally, the tip of the fingers. But there are other convex point too. So, we find convexity defects, which is the deepest point of deviation on the contour. By this we can find the number of fingers extended and then we can perform different functions according to the number of fingers extended.
